The Governor's Cup was presented to the Anderson Sports & Entertainment Center by Gov. Mark Sanford on February 3, 2005, at the annual at the South Carolina Governor's Conference on Tourism & Travel.

MYRTLE BEACH -- South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford presented the Anderson Sports & Entertainment Center with the state’s top tourism award during a luncheon here on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2005.

The "Governor's Cup Award" was presented to Anderson Sports & Entertainment Center Director Charles Wyatt and Anderson County Administrator Joey Preston during the South Carolina Governor's Conference on Tourism & Travel.

The 337-acre Anderson Sports & Entertainment Center, owned and operated by Anderson County, is comprised of the Civic Center of Anderson, the William A. Floyd Amphitheater, the Anderson Sports Center, Chris Taylor Memorial Park, Kid-Venture Playground, and hundreds of acres of public park space.

In 2004, the Anderson Sports & Entertainment Center hosted over 300 special events, in addition to attracting thousands of youths and adults for organized recreation league events. The Anderson Sports & Entertainment Center’s estimated total economic impact on the community in 2004 was $18.3 million, with an estimated 777,500 visitors during that same time frame.

“I want to thank the fantastic staff and management at the Anderson Sports & Entertainment Center for making this possible, along with our wonderful community and our council members,” Preston said in accepting the award.  “Back about 15 years ago, John Ginn had a dream to build a Civic Center in Anderson County.  Then in 1999 William Floyd helped see the dream of a beautiful 64-acre sports complex become a reality, along with our Amphitheater. Those two gentlemen are not alive today to see us win this award, but I am sure they are both looking down and smiling.  This award truly shows that, ‘if you build it, they will come.’”

Presenting the award along with Gov. Sanford was Chad Prosser, Director of South Carolina Parks, Recreation, and Tourism.

“With the best staff anywhere, and a supportive Administrator and County Council, our complex has grown tremendously in the past seven years or so,” Wyatt said after the luncheon. “We work very hard to make the Anderson Sports & Entertainment Center a source of pride to Anderson County, and to have a large and positive economic impact on our community.”

The Governor’s Cup announcement was the grand finale of the awards luncheon.

“I am extremely proud of the great things happening at the Anderson Sports and Entertainment Center,” Preston said about winning the award. “This recognition is another validation that we did the right thing when we created the complex. The Anderson Sports & Entertainment Center has an undeniable positive impact on our community.  The events happening there are improving quality of life here.”
